    by Ann Ferguson

We all have those go-to appliances that get our regular attention, like our trusty refrigerators and ovens. But what about those other appliances that quietly keep our homes running smoothly?

You might not think it, but these often-overlooked workhorses need a little love, too! Just like our other appliances, keeping your range hood, trash compactor, beverage cooler, and others in good shape prevents costly breakdowns!

Let’s explore some practical tips to keep these essential helpers performing at their best and running smoothly for years to come!

    1. Drawer Dishwashers

Think your drawer dishwasher doesn’t need much attention? Think again! These space-saving wonders keep your kitchen provide convenience at your fingertips, but only if properly maintained!

    • Clean the filter and spray arms: A quick rinse of the filter and spray arms will prevent food particles from clogging them, ensuring your dishes come out spotless.
    • Check and clean the door seals: Wipe the door seals with a damp cloth to remove debris that could cause leaks. If you notice any wear and tear, it might be time for a replacement.
    • Run a dishwasher cleaner: Using a dishwasher cleaner once a month will clear out any residue and keep your appliance running efficiently.
    Pro Tip:
Keep experiencing drainage issues or persistent clogs? Make sure to involve your local service team to check the pump or drainage hose!

    2. Trash Compactors

Out of sight, out of mind, right? Not when it comes to your trash compactor! While these lifesavers pack a punch, it's a sad day when they start to jam or smell. To avoid that, they’ll need some TLC!

    • Clean the compactor regularly: Wipe down the interior weekly with a disinfectant cleaner to keep those nasty smells at bay. For a deeper clean, try a mix of vinegar and baking soda.
    • Inspect for and clear any jams: Check for debris that could cause jams and remove any obstructions. If the ram gets stuck, unplug the unit before clearing it out.
    • Lubricate moving parts: Every few months, give the moving parts a light coating of machine oil or silicone spray to keep everything running smoothly.
    Pro Tip:
If your compactor continues to jam despite regular maintenance, it could indicate a problem with the drive belt, gears, or motor — leave it to the pros to fix!

    3. Beverage Centers/Wine Cooler

It's easy to overlook your beverage center or wine cooler when doing routine maintenance, especially if they live outside the kitchen! But, like any refrigeration unit, it’s a must-have on your maintenance list!

    • Clean the coils and vents: Every six months, unplug the cooler and use a vacuum with a brush attachment to gently clean the coils and vents so it’s not working extra hard.
    • Check the door seals: Inspect the seals every few months by closing the door on a piece of paper; if you can easily pull the paper out, the seal needs replacing and keep the cool air from escaping!
    • Clean the fan blades: Unplug the cooler and carefully clean the fan blades with a soft cloth every six months to improve the airflow and cooling efficiency!
    • Calibrate the thermostat: Use a refrigerator thermometer to check the internal temperature. If it doesn’t match the thermostat setting, you may need to calibrate or replace it (but leave that to the pros!)

    4. Drawer Microwaves

Drawer microwaves are incredibly convenient, but they often get overlooked for maintenance! This can lead to food buildup, malfunctioning doors, and poor performance. But luckily, all that is pretty preventable!

    • Clean the interior: Wipe down the inside of the microwave with a damp cloth and mild detergent weekly to avoid stuck-on food and spills.
    • Inspect the door mechanism: Check that the door opens and closes smoothly, and make sure no obstructions or damage could prevent a proper seal.
    • Check the turntable and roller ring: Remove the turntable and roller ring, wash them with warm, soapy water, and dry them thoroughly before placing them back in the microwave.
    Pro Tip:
If your microwave door doesn’t close properly or the turntable isn’t rotating smoothly, it might be time for a professional check-up to ensure everything functions correctly.

    5. Garbage Disposals

Where would you be without your trusty garbage disposal handling gross leftovers past their prime? In a stinky mess! Unfortunately, it can be easy to forget that the disposal needs regular care to prevent smells and clogs and upkeep their grinding power!

    • Run cold water while using the disposal: Cold water helps solidify and break down food particles, making them easier to grind and preventing clogs.
    • Regularly grind ice cubes: Ice cubes can help sharpen the blades and clean out any debris stuck inside, keeping the disposal in good working order.
    • Clean with baking soda and vinegar: Pour baking soda down the disposal, followed by vinegar. This mixture will fizz and bubble, breaking down buildup and eliminating odors. After the fizzing stops, rinse with hot water.
